Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is, depending on who you ask, the finest game Hideo Kojima ever made. A Cold War jungle survival stealth game in which a soldier must infiltrate Soviet territory, prevent nuclear war, and ultimately execute the woman who taught him everything. The ending remains one of the most quietly devastating in the medium.

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is its remake. Built on Unreal Engine 5. Released August 28, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Over two million copies sold in its first months.

What has changed

The visuals, entirely. The jungle breathes now. Rain falls with weight. Snake's wounds accumulate and remain — every scar, bruise and bullet hole persisting across the entire game, telling the story of each player's individual journey through the Soviet wilderness.

The story, characters, voice acting, music and gameplay structure are preserved faithfully. The original audio recordings have been reused. David Hayter returns as Naked Snake. The Snake Eater theme, performed by Cynthia Harrell, is unchanged. Some things should not be touched.

What else is new

Fox Hunt, a new online multiplayer mode built around camouflage and pursuit, was added in a post-launch update. PS5 and PC players receive the Snake vs. Monkey Ape Escape crossover, returning from the original. Xbox players receive an exclusive Bomberman-inspired mode.

PlatinumGames, developers of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, rebuilt the Guy Savage dream sequence. This is either wonderful or deeply unsettling depending on your relationship with the original.

The verdict

Critics were largely positive. The most common criticism — that it adheres too faithfully to the original, offering little that is genuinely new — is either a complaint or a compliment depending on your position.

Kage's position: Snake Eater did not need to be reinvented. It needed to be seen clearly. Δ provides that. Nothing more was required.
